The Cleveland Cavaliers are coming off of a convincing road win against the Detroit Pistons and have a chance to win another in Indiana on Friday night.

Behind strong shooting from inside the arc, the Cavaliers have a 47-45 lead after the first 24 minutes.

While the Cavs have a two-point advantage at the break, they are shooting just 57-percent from the line and 1-of-9 from long distance. The Pacers outscored the Cavs 8-5 in the final 2:50 of the first half, too.

The No. 1 overall pick in last year’s draft, Kyrie Irving, leads all scorers with 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting with two assists and two rebounds for the Cavaliers. George Hill is the leading scorer for the Pacers with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting off the bench.

AUBURN HILLS — The Cleveland Cavaliers and Detroit Pistons are both rebuilding, trying to make their franchises relevant in the NBA again.

Cleveland looks like it might have more to work with during this lockout-shortened season.

Rookie Kyrie Irving had 14 points and seven assists to help Cleveland beat Detroit 105-89 on Wednesday night, spoiling the Pistons’ first home opener with new owner Tom Gores.

Irving, the No. 1 pick overall, was sensational in the first half and put a damper on the party.

He had 12 points on 5 of 7 shooting with five assists, three rebounds and two steals at halftime when the Cavs led by 11. The former Duke star bounced back from a six-point performance in his NBA debut, a loss to Toronto.

“In the last game, I wasn’t enjoying the game,” Irving said. “I think I wanted to be so serious. I wasn’t joking around and there was no smile on my face. It’s just about feeling comfortable out there.”

Reserve Samardo Samuels scored 17 and Ramon Sessions had 16 points off the bench for the Cavaliers, who got 15 points from Antawn Jamison and 10 points apiece from Anderson Varejao and first-round pick Tristan Thompson.

“We were much more aggressive from start to finish,” Cleveland coach Byron Scott said.

Detroit’s Ben Gordon had 25 points and rookie reserve Brandon Knight scored 23.

Sessions made the last shot of the first quarter to put the Cavs ahead for good and they turned the game into a rout in the fourth quarter.

“You get what you deserve,” Detroit’s first-year coach Lawrence Frank said. “We got what we deserved.”

Cleveland made 57 percent of its shots and held the Pistons to 44 percent shooting.

Fans of the Cleveland Cavaliers were treated to a nice surprise on Wednesday, December 28.

Fans of the Cleveland Cavaliers were treated to a nice surprise on Wednesday, December 28. After last year’s abysmal 19-win and 63-loss performance, we got used to the fact that wins were hard to come by. We hoped for an improved squad this season but knew there would be some growing pains. A solid victory always helps.

As the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Detroit Pistons by the score of 105-89, Cleveland improves to 1-1 on the season while Detroit falls to 0-2.

Ramon Sessions was the top performer of the game for the Cavs scoring 16 points with seven rebounds and six assists coming off the bench. While he led the team in scoring he was only 4-11 from the field, which is still cause for some concern.

For the Pistons, rookie Brandon Knight led the team with 23 points on the night paired with a rebound and six assists. Unlike Sessions he was 10-13 from the field. Ben Gordon scored 25 points on the night but Knight gave a better overall performance in the Pistons’ losing effort.

Rookie Kyrie Irving had a much better night scoring 14 points with four rebounds and seven assists on the night. He was 5-9 from the field and a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. After his disappointing opening night performance against the Toronto Raptors, he had nowhere to go but up. I was happy to see him show much improvement in this game.

Tristan Thompson played well yet again adding 10 points, four rebounds, and an assist coming off the bench. While he has only played in two games in his young career, I have no complaints the Cavs picked Thompson as high as they did in the draft.

Already this season has a different feel to it. Fans realize the Cavs are young and rebuilding. Last year was a season filled with anger and hostility. This year is a season filled with promise. There is the promise that comes with knowing Dan Gilbert is dedicated to building a team the right way this time around and the promise that while the team will surely take its bumps and bruises this season, they will get better.

Cavs’ fans have something to look forward to again.

Next up for the Cavaliers are the Indiana Pacers on Friday, December 30.

Cleveland Cavaliers point guard and top overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft Kyrie Irving started the Cavs’ season opener over veteran Ramon Sessions. Sessions started in the preseason games but this move was not a surprise. The Cavs need Irving to get all the experience he can get. Irving finished with six points (2 – 12 from the floor), three rebounds, seven assists, a steal, and a turnover in 26 minutes.

Irving was shaky for most of the game. He has a long way to go but this was his first real game since tearing a ligament in his right big toe over a year ago while playing for Duke. He played a mere 11 games in his only season there.

Playing point guard in the NBA will be a tough transition from college. It is the hardest position to play. Irving should be fine but it will take time. When he starts getting more confident in his game, we should see a big improvement.

Tristan Thompson

The Cavs’ other lottery pick in the 2011 NBA Draft was Tristan Thompson. He was picked fourth overall. Thompson fared better than Irving did but he was under less pressure. He scored 13 points and hauled in five boards in the game.

Hopefully, Thompson was not taking notes as his mentor, Antawn Jamison, was jacking up 20 shots while making only six. Jamison even launched four three point attempts. He made none of those, of course. Jamison was heaving the ball at the rim like a shooting guard. It seemed like he shot the ball every time he had it. If he could play a little defense, it would be helpful.

Thompson scored one less point than Jamison on 14 less shots. His seven free throw attempts were more than any other Cav. He did that while only playing only 17 minutes. Thompson was impressive.

One game

It is hard to judge this young team by just one game. It was a game that the Cavs could have won but, like Irving said after the game, this was just one game with 65 to go.

As the Cleveland Cavaliers say goodbye to Manny Harris, they welcome Mychel Thompson onto their roster. Coach Byron Scott said that the decision was not made solely based on Harris’ injury, but that he truly felt that Thompson was a better fit for the team and for the direction that the Cavs’ are currently heading.

“It has been my dream since I was a little kid to play in the NBA,” said Thompson. “Just to make the team is not my goal. I want to stay in the NBA, I want to stick. I don’t want to be here for a little bit.”

Just before preseason began, coach Scott talked about how much he liked Thompson’s passion for the game. He also said that he liked Thompson’s decision-making and size. However, Scott did not really get into too many specifics on his decision in choosing Thompson over Harris.

Thompson was playing with the NBA Developmental League team, the Erie Bayhawks, prior to the Cavs inviting him to come to their training camp. In five games with the Bayhawks, he averaged 19.8 points. Obviously, the NBA is going to be more competitive than the D-League, but seeing his stats in that league does give us a glimpse at what Thompson is capable of. Coach Scott also sees great potential in him.

“He’s doing pretty good. He’s a solid basketball player. He doesn’t make a lot of mistakes. He just does what he knows he can do. He’s pretty good on the defensive end,” said coach Scott during training camp.

Seeing how the Cavs did in their home opener on 12/26/11 against the Toronto Raptors, it is clear that defense is something that the Cavs could use a lot more of. Also, Manny Harris was not the strongest defensively. We will have to see Thompson play more to see exactly how effective he will be long-term on the defensive end, but it is clear that if he is up to the challenge, the Cavs would not be losing much by allowing him to show us what he’s got.

So far, it seems like coach Scott has made the right choice in choosing Thompson over Harris, but of course, only time will tell.

R. Elizabeth C. Kitchen was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio and still lives there. She was raised a Cavs’ fan and has remained loyal through all of the teams ups and downs. She remains confident that the Cavs will bring home a championship at some point in her life. Follow Rose on Twitter @Rose_Kitchen

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — If Cavaliers coach Byron Scott needs proof that his preaching about defensive improvement this season is setting in, he need look no further than starting power forward Antawn Jamison. Yes, that Antawn Jamison

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — If Cavaliers coach Byron Scott needs proof that his preaching about defensive improvement this season is setting in, he need look no further than starting power forward Antawn Jamison.

Yes, that Antawn Jamison.

The Cavs leading scorer last season, who averaged 18 points per game and 15.6 shots per game — roughly one every two minutes.

The guy LeBron James once called the most unorthodox scorer in the league because of his variety of weird flip shots and floaters.

On the first day of training camp this season, Jamison talked about his leadership role on this young team and the fact that it had to start on the defensive end of the floor.

“I think defensively I have to not be a liability, and when we watch film coach can always rely on me being in the right spots and not being the teaching point of our film sessions,” Jamison said. “I think defensively letting guys know I’m not what they call a defensive specialist but just through hard work and paying attention I can improve on that.”

It probably isn’t the first time in his career the 13-year veteran has said that, but defense definitely hasn’t been his strong suit. His renewed commitment thrills Scott.

“That’s a veteran who understands how important it is on that end of the floor,” Scott said. “He has such a leadership role on this team that it’s going to be big for him, and for us, if he’s committed on that end of the floor. I think it shows all our young guys that if Antawn can do it, a guy who has been in the league [13] years, there’s definitely no way in the world that they’re going to be able to get away with not doing it.”

The Cavs should be greatly helped by the return of Jamison, who missed the last 26 games of the season with a broken left pinkie finger. That capped off what had been a trying season, what with the Cavs losing 63 games and setting an NBA record with a 26-game losing streak in the middle of it.

In fact, nothing has worked out quite the way Jamison or the Cavs had hoped since they obtained him for Zydrunas Ilgauskas at the trade deadline in 2010, hoping he’d be the final piece in a team featuring James and Shaquille O’Neal.

Now Jamison, scheduled to make $15 million in this, the last year of his contract, has been rumored to be trade bait or an amnesty candidate. But he has learned not to worry about things he can’t control.

“I just think about the cards that are dealt right now,” he said. “To be honest, if they didn’t get rid of me last year, I don’t see a reason to do it now. There’s a part of me that really wants to be here. There’s a part of me that wants to show Tristan [Thompson] and Samardo [Samuels] and even Kyrie [Irving] how to do this, how to be a professional, knowing that they’re going to be the foundation of this organization and to sort of have my footprints into just the way they prepare for games, the way they come in and prepare themselves.”

Time away with his injury last season gave Jamison a totally new perspective on the game he loves. Well, that and getting up for his turn at car pooling his kids to school at 6:15 a.m.

“Last year I was to the point where I was like, ‘Yeah, man, I don’t know how many years of this I can take,’” he admitted. “Even though last year was a tough year, the times I played I enjoyed competing. A lot of these young guys look up to me, so I want to set the best example for them as well. Even though things are not going well you still have to come in and compete at a high level and try to make it as fun as possible.

“I’m to the point now where I’m just enjoying the game. Before I got traded here my biggest concern was that I never had an opportunity to compete for a championship. Even though it was a short stint, I had that opportunity. I’m just here to do what I love to do, which is play the game of basketball. I’m enjoying it more than ever.”

The Cleveland Cavaliers are looking toward the future. Kyrie Irving is a legitimate Rookie of the Year contender.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are looking toward the future. Kyrie Irving is a legitimate Rookie of the Year contender. With two of the top draft picks (Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson) now a part of the Cavs’ organization, the Cavs will need to play aggressive basketball to win games. Here is a breakdown of each position:

Point Guard

Baron Davis is gone and the Irving-era has begun. Coach Byron Scott has yet to name who will start at point guard between Ramon Sessions and Kyrie Irving but there is no doubt that the Cavs’ first round pick (Irving) will take over at some point. Regardless of who starts, though, the Cavs might have one of the best point guard tandems in the league. Unfortunately, they won’t be able to play together much.

Irving is the real deal. He has polish, speed, and a nice jumper. He makes it look easy getting to the rim and finding teammates in spots where they can score. He will need to improve, of course. Irving is not going to be an elite point guard this season as he adjusts to the NBA but he is plenty good already.

Sessions looks like he has worked on his game during the lockout. He seems to have picked up strength and might be taking defense seriously. He isn’t a great shooter but he can get to the rim and hopefully score when he gets there.

Right now, the offense looks better with Irving at the point. Sessions might not even be with the Cavs after the trade deadline.

Shooting Guard

Anthony Parker is a 36-year-old shooting guard who showed he still has some game left. He can put up points in the right situation and his veteran leadership will help a young team like this. Daniel Gibson is pretty much a one-dimensional player. He can launch open threes with the best of them but that is about it. Gibson can also run the point if necessary.

Power Forward

Speaking of older players who have seen their best years pass by, Antawn Jamison is back. He’ll be relied on to score and should reach the 18 points a game he put up last season. He has looked like a player on the downside so far in the preseason. Jamison will get it going in time for the first game and will likely be the Cavs’ leading scorer. Tristan Thompson is an aggressive rebounder and defender who can attack the rim. He doesn’t have a reliable jumper yet but that may come in time. Overall, his offensive game is raw. Jamison might be able to help him refine some low-post moves.

Shooting Forward

Omri Casspi could be ready to take the next step. Some are saying that he might be a breakout player. Last season, he scored 8.6 points a game for the Kings. This season, he’ll have plenty of chances to improve upon that. Casspi needs to work on his defense. Watching him play, however, it’s obvious that he is a tough competitor who makes his presence known when he is on the floor.

Center

Anderson Varejao suffered a torn tendon in his ankle last year and had to sit out 51 games. He was badly missed when he went down. He feels really good and is excited to be back out on the court. He brings energy, hustle and rebounding to the team. Varejao is clearly the best rebounder on this year’s Cavalier’s team. His emotional leadership and team-first attitude will undoubtedly help the team get through another tough season. If Varejao goes down again, they will be in trouble.

Overall

This team will go as far as Irving can take them. With help from the veterans, they should be able to improve upon their 19 win 2010-11 season. The Bulls are the class of the division but second place is wide open.

Cleveland, Ohio – Welcome to today’s edition of Starting Blocks TV, hosted by Branson Wright.

Which team do you think will win the 2012 NBA title. That’s the question in today’s Starting Blocks poll.

Today’s guest on SBTV is Plain Dealer Cavaliers beat writer Tom Reed, who is predicting the Oklahoma City Thunder to prevail over the Miami Heat.

Tom is checking in from this afternoon’s Cavs practice in Berea, and he says the Cavaliers are trying to build a foundation with rookies Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson. He says Irving will need to keep working on his defense, and Thompson on his offensive moves. Reed also says the Cavs realize they are going to have to run to get easy baskets until the half-court offense comes around.

He also talks about whether he thinks veteran forward Antawn Jamison will be with the Cavs at season’s end.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — How big a difference does Anderson Varejao make on the defensive end of the floor for the Cavaliers?

Here’s a snapshot from the Cavs’ 90-89 loss to the Detroit Pistons in an exhibition game on Tuesday night at The Q:

With the forward/center in the lineup, the Cavs held the Pistons to 33.3 percent shooting in the third quarter while building a 12-point lead. With him on the bench, the Cavs gave up a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter as the Pistons got back into the game, eventually winning on Austin Daye’s two free throws with 3.1 seconds left.

Basically, the same thing happened on Friday night in Detroit, although the Cavs were able to survive that drought. That wasn’t the case Tuesday, as the Cavs finish the preseason 1-1.

“When he’s on the floor, we’re just a much better basketball team — on both ends,” Cavs coach Byron Scott said of Varejao, who finished with nine points and 10 rebounds. “His experience, his smarts out there make a lot of things go well. Obviously when he’s off the floor we’re not as good a basketball team as we would like to be. That just shows how important he is to our team.”

Scott found that out the hard way last season when he lost Varejao for the last 51 games of the season after Varejao tore a tendon in his right foot that required surgery. While Varejao has looked great in training camp, the coach admitted he likely will have to keep an eye on his minutes with a 66-game schedule in 122 days.

“I’ve got a number in mind I feel I can play him and be pretty comfortable,” Scott said. “The one thing I haven’t done is discuss it with him. We’ll talk. If you put him on the court, he’s going to play as hard as he can. It doesn’t matter how many minutes you play him. But with the type of schedule we have, obviously, I want to keep him as fresh as possible.”

That will be essential if the Cavs are to make the sort of advances defensively Scott would like. Last season, the Cavs allowed opponents to shoot 47.5 percent. In February, Scott called on his team to try and hold opponents to 46 percent the rest of the season.

That didn’t happen, but that won’t be good enough this year. In the two games against the Pistons, the Cavs have held Detroit to 37.4 percent shooting, including 37.1 percent on Tuesday.

“There’s a bunch of numbers we try to chart and tell our guys, ‘This is where we want to be at the end of the season,’” Scott said while declining to reveal those numbers. “Some of those numbers, probably in their minds, might be unrealistic, but you know what? You’ve got to shoot for the stars. We’re just trying to make sure they understand how important we are trying to emphasize certain things on the defensive end.”

The Cavs are getting it — thanks to Scott and Varejao.

“We’re working a lot on defense,” said guard/forward Omri Casspi, who led the Cavs with 18 points and 5 rebounds. “We made huge progress from Day One in training camp. We’re still learning. We have some tweaks we need to get better, but we’re working hard every day in practice. I see us getting better and better.

“Andy is a great defender, and a great team defender. He’s always there to help. He’s always there to make the right play. We’re learning from Andy and we’re learning from our coaches.”

As the Cleveland Cavaliers complete their first preseason game of the 2011-12 season, they are already looking better and more in sync than they did last season. On Friday (12/16/11), the Cavs defeated the Detroit Pistons 91 to 87 and while there were some bumps during the game, the team recovered quickly and kept pushing forward.

Rookie Kyrie Irving and veteran Antawn Jamison were who to watch tonight. Surprisingly, Samardo Samuels also pulled in 15 points for the Cavs tonight. He looked pretty clumsy when he first entered the game and then seemed to find his rhythm. He took several fouls and made most of the shots. Jamison had 13 points and Irving led the Cavs with 21 points in his first NBA game.

A lot of people were skeptical about Irving since he only played in 11 college basketball games, but if this game is any indication of how he will fare in the NBA, I think it is safe to say that the Cavs have a very solid and skilled player on their hands that will only get better with time and increased experience.

Tristan Thompson also got some time on the court tonight and really showed off his defensive skills. In addition to his epic block that had the jaws of many Pistons on the floor, he also scored eight points. In a way, he almost reminded me of J.J. Hickson in how Hickson would literally slam the ball to the ground when blocking and seem to show up exactly when he was needed.

Will the Cavs be playoff contenders this season? Probably not, but of course it is too soon to tell and if you know anything about Cleveland sports, you know they are unpredictable. However, it seems certain that even without playoffs, the Cavs are definitely headed for more wins and a more exciting and explosive season than they had last year. Not only do they have some new and talented players, but they have a new sense of direction and motivation to take the court and set it on fire.

R. Elizabeth C. Kitchen was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio and still lives there. She was raised a Cavs’ fan and has remained loyal through all of the teams ups and downs.

CLEVELAND (AP)

When the Cavaliers selected point guard Kyrie Irving with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, veteran Baron Davis’ future in Cleveland became uncertain.

On Wednesday, his short stay ended.

Using the NBA’s new amnesty clause, the Cavs waived Davis, a move that knocks the $28 million he is owed over the next two seasons off the salary cap. The Cavs will have to pay Davis, but they’ll have more flexibility going forward as they try to improve a team that won just 19 games last year.

Davis was acquired last season in a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers. Although Cleveland was probably not the destination Davis had in mind, he played hard, seemed to embrace a leadership role and put any past problems between he and Cavs coach Byron Scott behind. The pair had a falling out when Davis played for Scott in New Orleans.

”We would like to thank Baron for his contributions to the team during his time in Cleveland,” said general manager Chris Grant. ”He has been an absolute professional since the day he joined the Cavs and we now wish him the best in the future.”

Davis’ release had been expected since the opening of training camp past week. Scott gave a strong clue that Davis’ time was running out when the coach said he — and not Davis — was the perfect mentor for Irving.

”I’m going to miss Cleveland fans and the organization!” Davis wrote on his Twitter page. ”When I was down and out you believed in me and embraced me! I will always be a Cav!”

With Davis gone, Scott can immediately turn his offense over to Irving, the former Duke standout who wound up with Cleveland after Grant acquired Davis and an unprotected lottery pick from the Clippers for guard Mo Williams and forward Jamario Moon. That pick ended up being the one that got the Cavs the first selection.

Davis averaged 13.9 points and 6.1 assists in 15 games with the Cavs last season. He missed time because of injuries and a family death, but when he was in the lineup Cleveland went 6-9.

The 32-year-old hadn’t practiced since arriving at camp because of a bulging disc in his back. Davis left the team last weekend to get a second opinion on the injury. He’s now a free agent and should draw interest from other teams if he’s healthy.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — There are occasions when a celebrated youngster doesn’t make good early impressions upon his arrival to a new team with curious coaches and experienced players watching.

Such, so far, is not the case for Cleveland Cavaliers rookie point guard Kyrie Irving.

So far, Irving has demonstrated the type of qualities observers look for in a first overall draft pick, which is exactly what the Cavs made him after he had played just 11 collegiate games for Duke University.

Rick Noland writes for the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram and Medina County Gazette that Irving has impressed Cavaliers coaches and players during the early days of training camp:

Cavaliers coach Byron Scott was talking rather generically about top draft picks Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson, but a quick comment within his answer spoke volumes.

“Kyrie,” Scott said Monday at the team’s annual media day, “has a chance to be a superstar.”

The Cavs have only practiced five times over the last four days and don’t play their first preseason game until Friday in Detroit, but the

19-year-old Irving, taken with the No. 1 pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, has made a great first impression.

“He can play — simple, point blank,” veteran guard Daniel Gibson said. “I just like his pace and his tempo.”

“Kyrie is very talented,” said center Anderson Varejao. “He can go to the basket, he can shoot and he’s athletic. He’s got moves. He’s a smart point guard.

“It’s never easy to come into the league and do it all your first year, but he can really help us. I believe he is going to do a good job for us.”

To no one’s surprise, the Cavs will likely cut ties with veteran point guard Baron Davis. The Plain Dealer reports: “The Cavaliers and agents representing the 32-year-old Davis spoke Thursday to discuss his future with the franchise, The Plain Dealer has learned. Earlier in the day, Yahoo Sports reported the Cavaliers had planned to waive Davis through the amnesty clause once the new collective bargaining agreement became official. The Plain Dealer has not confirmed the Yahoo report, but a league source said no decision had been reached as of late Thursday night … The Cavaliers are under the impression they will have access to their $14.5 million trade exception, which can be used in whole or in part. How this might involve Davis is not known. What’s also uncertain is how much Davis’ desire to be a free agent was driving Thursday’s discussions. To this point much of the focus has been trained on the team’s decision, but it could be Davis wants a chance to play for a contender and is seeing what the Cavs can do to facilitate it. Just two days ago, sources told The Plain Dealer the Cavaliers would take a methodical approach to arguably its biggest preseason decision, perhaps letting Davis play an exhibition game or two before reaching a verdict.”

That’s all the news for today.

Earlier Thursday it was even reported that the Cavaliers had decided on that option, but the latest reports indicate that Davis could remain on the roster.

The Cavs have not made a decision on whether to use the amnesty clause on Baron Davis, sources told ESPN’s Brian Windhorst. The report goes directly against what Yahoo! Sports counterpart Marc Spears reported earlier in the day, but considering Windhorst was previously a beat writer for the Cavs, it makes sense that he would still have sources in the city.

The Cavs could also use the amnesty clause on Antawn Jamison as he’s owed $15 million this season — just over one million more than Davis — but considering Davis has an extra season on his contract and the Cavs have three point guards on the roster without him, it would seem he would be the wiser cut from the books.
