Zydrunas Ilgauskas officially retires from NBA

Lithuanian big man Zydrunas Ilgauskas is retiring from the NBA after 13 seasons, 12 of them anchoring he middle for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Ilgauskas spoke with the Cleveland Plain Dealer, which tweeted his quotes.

Ilgauskas: “enough is enough. My body is beat up and I’m tired physically. There is no age limit, but everyone knows when it’s time.”

More Z: “I want to spend more time with my family. I have spent the last 15 years living out of a suitcase.”

Ilgauskas suffered serious foot injuries before coming to the NBA and had a couple of foot surgeries, not unlike the ones that ended Yao Ming’s career. However, Ilgauskas was just 21-years-old at the time and his body was able recover well enough for him to play at an NBA level. His deft outside touch — he took 5 shots from 16-23 feet a game in 2009 and hit 44 percent of them — allowed him to rack up double-digit scoring per game in 10 of his NBA seasons.

Ilgauskas was beloved in Cleveland, where he stuck with a troubled franchise for years then was a key part of the LeBron James era. Ilgauskas was very involved with some Cleveland area charities and was really part of the community.

There has been talk of retiring Big Z’s number in Cleveland.

Ilgauskas followed LeBron to Miami last season but was unable to provide the inside presence the Heat needed. He was just not physically able to do it anymore.

So he is just going to walk away. He will be missed, he was one of the good guys of the league.

That’s all the news for today.

Ben Wallace charged with drunken driving and…

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Authorities in suburban Detroit say Detroit Pistons center Ben Wallace has been charged with drunken driving and unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon after a traffic stop.

Bloomfield Township police said Thursday that the 37-year-old Wallace was arrested about 3 a.m. Saturday after officers observed a Cadillac Escalade being driven erratically. Police said they found an unloaded pistol in a backpack.

Officers say Wallace was given a blood-alcohol test and he was above Michigan’s legal limit of 0.08 percent.

Police declined to provide further details.

Wallace, who helped the Pistons win the 2004 NBA title, was arraigned and released on a $5,000 personal bond. His next court hearing is Monday.

Wallace attended Cleveland Community College (1992-94) and played for the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2008-09.

The 6th Floor Blog: My Three Favorite Teams —…

September 28, 2011, 1:57 pm By JOANNA MILTER

Losers. I love them. That’s why my three favorite sports teams are the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Browns. As every Cleveland sports fan knows, we haven’t finished on top in a major sport since 1964, when the Browns won their last NFL championship — before it was even the Super Bowl. The Indians last won the World Series in 1948, and the Cavaliers have never been champions.

Instead, some of our most dismal moments have been prelude to other teams’ triumphs. The Catch, by Willie Mays — that was made against the Indians in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series (which the New York Giants went on to sweep). The Fumble, by Earnest Byner — that happened when the Browns running back lost the ball at the two-yard line with one minute left in the 1988 AFC Championship game against the Denver Broncos, when a touchdown would have tied the game. The two World Series appearances in the 1990s: In 1995 the Indians’ loss to the Braves gave the city of Atlanta its first and only major championship; in 1997 the Indians’ loss to the Florida Marlins — the Marlins! a wild-card team! — gave that franchise its first title. It’s little consolation that The Decision, when LeBron James dumped the city on national television, hasn’t led to someone else’s championship . . . yet.

At least we get to embrace the perpetual melancholy of the underdog. At this, we can win. Of those cities with three or more major sports franchises, Cleveland has gone the longest without a championship. So all you Chicago Cubs whiners, New York Knicks kvetchers and Minnesota Vikings crybabies, try rooting for a city that hasn’t won a title of ANY kind in 47 years. Then come talk to me.

Cleveland Cavaliers rookies Kyrie Irving and…

The Big Three of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh will play together and host  “The South Florida All-Star Classic,” writes Chris Broussard of ESPN.

The game will be held on Oct. 8 at Florida International University, where Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas is coach. All proceeds will go toward a charity supporting the educational community of South Florida.

Broussard writes that a number of NBA players are slated to join the Miami trio on the court. There’s a also the possibility that Cleveland Cavaliers first-round picks Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson will also play.

Irving and Thompson are waiting to see if a spot opens up, a source told ESPN.com’s Brian Windhorst. Other rookies, the source said, were interested but there’s no room in the game for other first-year players. There’s no interest in 15-player rosters because players want to be able to play in the game and not sit on the bench.
